The Letter Men

The Letter Men is a powerful short film inspired by the true story of Gilbert Bradley and Gordon Bowsher — two British soldiers who fell in love during World War Two, at a time when their relationship was punishable by prison, or worse.

Based on the real letters discovered by Mark Hignett, the film brings to life the passion, longing, and secrecy captured in their handwritten words.

The Letter Men was sympathetically told in a moving 8-minute, 40-second film that brings Gilbert and Gordon’s story to life with care, respect, and authenticity.

We are especially grateful to Andy Valentine, Hollywood producer and director of the film, who made multiple trips to Oswestry to ensure the story was portrayed as truthfully and tenderly as possible. His dedication to honouring the original letters and the love they contain has helped ensure this once-hidden story reaches a global audience in the heartfelt way it deserves.

This beautiful retelling is more than a love story — it’s a reminder of how far we’ve come, and how far we still have to go.

“This isn’t just a war story. It’s a human story. A love story. And it needed to be told gently.” — Andy Valentine
